Burmese pythons, native to Southeast Asia, have become an invasive species of concern in South Florida, and specifically the Everglades.  Once these invasive species reach adulthood, there are no natural predators to keep them in check.  The impact on native fauna has been devastating: a 90% decline in mammals such as rabbits, raccoons, and otters, and a 75% decline in herons, egrets, and other wading birds.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission allows residents and non-residents to capture and humanely euthanize all non-native reptiles using a 2 step process.  First, the animal must be rendered unconscious with a blow to the head, then the brain destroyed by puncturing the brain stem with a sharp object, a process called pithing.  No hunting license is required, and there is no limit to the number of invasive animals that can be removed.

There are 32 locations managed by the FWC and South Florida Water Management District where pythons can be found and euthanized.  They can also be hunted on private land, with the owner's written consent.

There are 2 methods of hunting: via boat in the Everglades or on land by cruising areas with known populations.  The method is determined by time of year, weather conditions, water levels, and the availability of a boat or airboat to navigate the Everglades.
